San Fulgencio lies in the Vega Baja between inland Alicante and the beaches of the southern Costa Blanca. At first glance it is a quiet Spanish village surrounded by agricultural land, but the municipality is much more varied than it initially appears. In addition to the traditional centre, it includes large residential areas such as Urbanización La Marina, El Oasis and La Escuera.

As a result, you can experience two very different lifestyles within the same municipality. The village retains a distinctly Spanish atmosphere, while the residential developments nearer the coast have a much more international character.

Traditional San Fulgencio

San Fulgencio's centre is compact and still feels like a genuine Vega Baja village. Around Plaza de la Constitución and the surrounding streets you will find the town hall, local shops, cafés, restaurants and everyday services.

Life here is not primarily organised around tourism. Residents shop locally, meet for coffee and come together during traditional fiestas and community events.

That makes the distinction between San Fulgencio village and the residential developments particularly important for property buyers.

A village founded in the eighteenth century

San Fulgencio has an unusual history. It was founded in 1729 as part of Cardinal Luis Antonio Belluga's Pías Fundaciones. Large areas of marshland were drained and transformed into productive agricultural land on which new settlements could be established.

San Fulgencio was also granted the status of Villa Real by King Felipe V. Agriculture has remained closely connected to the municipality ever since.

Ancient history beneath the modern municipality

Although modern San Fulgencio dates from the eighteenth century, people were living in this area much earlier.

Important archaeological sites include La Escuera and El Oral, where remains from the Iberian period have been discovered. Finds from these sites form part of the collection of the San Fulgencio Archaeological Museum.

It is a fascinating side of a municipality now better known for its residential communities.

Urbanización La Marina

Travel towards the coast and the atmosphere changes considerably. Here you will find Urbanización La Marina, the largest and best-known residential development in the municipality.

The area expanded strongly from the late 1980s onwards and today provides shops, restaurants, healthcare, a tourist office and a wide range of everyday services. El Oasis, La Escuera and Las Pesqueras are among the municipality's other residential areas.

The population is highly international, and hearing several European languages alongside Spanish is completely normal.

Urbanización La Marina is not La Marina village

This causes plenty of confusion. Urbanización La Marina belongs to San Fulgencio, whereas the coastal village of La Marina belongs to Elche municipality.

The two areas are very close together, which is why the names are frequently mixed up, particularly in property advertisements.

San Fulgencio's residential developments are also considerably closer to the coast than the traditional village centre. The municipality states that the urbanisations are around two kilometres from the village and approximately one kilometre from the beach.

The beach is never far away

San Fulgencio itself is not technically a seaside town, but from the residential areas the Mediterranean is only minutes away.

Guardamar del Segura is also nearby, offering long sandy beaches, dunes and pine forests.

For people who want to live close to the sea without being directly in a busy coastal resort, this can be an excellent balance.

An exceptionally international community

One of the defining features of San Fulgencio is its international population. The municipality itself highlights the cosmopolitan character of its residential areas and the large number of residents who have moved here from abroad.

The local festival calendar reflects both sides of the municipality. San Fulgencio and San Antón are celebrated in January, while the Virgen del Remedio is honoured on 7 October.

In August, Urbanización La Marina holds its Virgen de la Paz festivities, bringing together residents from many different nationalities.

Traditional Spanish village celebrations therefore exist alongside events that reflect modern San Fulgencio's multicultural population.

Eating out in San Fulgencio

Food is another area where the contrast is easy to see. The traditional centre offers a more Spanish atmosphere, with local agricultural produce forming an important part of the food culture.

In and around the residential developments, the range becomes much more international.

San Fulgencio provides the facilities required for year-round living, including shops, education, healthcare, restaurants and sports facilities. The municipal tourist office is based in Urbanización La Marina.

Guardamar, Rojales, Ciudad Quesada, Dolores and Torrevieja are also within convenient driving distance.

Living in San Fulgencio

Living in San Fulgencio can therefore mean very different things. Choose the traditional village and you will be closer to Spanish daily life and the agricultural landscape. Choose Urbanización La Marina or El Oasis and the surroundings become much more international and residential.
