Emigration checklist
When you emigrate, there are many things to consider, so it is helpful to use a checklist to track what you have already done. Below is an overview of items you can organize. Of course, this is personal, but with this checklist, you have a good starting point.
The following checklist contains an overview of the documents you will need for your emigration. The exact documents required may vary depending on the country/region/location. Check in advance to ensure all documents are complete and still valid. Do this again before departure to ensure a smooth emigration process.
- Passports (also check the expiration date)
- Copies of passports. It is helpful to have both physical copies and a digital file.
- Several recent passport photos
- Driver's license (check the expiration date and also make a copy)
- Deregistration from the municipality and/or immigration police
- Birth certificate (international)
- Marriage certificate and documents (international)
- Vaccination certificate from the national vaccination program
- Health declaration from your general practitioner
- Other medical records (dentist, specialists)
- Travel documents / travel insurance
- Employment contract or employer's statement from your (future) employer
- Original diplomas (certificates with certified translation)
- Are you continuing to work in the Netherlands or Belgium? Then it is advisable to apply for an S1 form from your health insurance
- European Health Card (health insurance)
- If you receive a WIA/WAO benefit, request a confirmation letter with the disability percentage in Spanish.
- For children, a statement from the school principal about the type of education, classes attended, and results
- Church documents (baptism certificates, etc.)
- Pet passport
- Health certificate and vaccination record for pets
- Lease and rental contracts
- Maintenance contracts
- Memberships in associations
- Subscriptions to newspapers and magazines, for example
- Telephone and internet connection
- Insurance
- Health insurance
- Pension fund
- Tax office
- Your Dutch bank (cancel or update address)
- Your mobile provider
- You can notify a change of address at the post office, so that mail will be delivered to your new address.
- Apply for an NIE number (can also be done at the Spanish embassy in Amsterdam, but there are long wait times)
- Open a Spanish bank account
- Have a reliable contact person in Spain
- Grant a power of attorney in Spain, for example, to your gestor
