Greetings from Formentera del Segura: a small village beside the Segura River

Formentera del Segura lies in the heart of the Vega Baja between Rojales and Almoradí, only around ten kilometres from the point where the Segura River reaches the Mediterranean at Guardamar. Covering just 4.3 km², the municipality consists of the main village, Los Palacios and Fincas de la Vega.

Its small scale is part of the attraction. You can enjoy a peaceful Spanish setting while Rojales, Benijófar, Ciudad Quesada, Almoradí and Guardamar are all close by.

A small Spanish village

Formentera del Segura is not somewhere you visit to work through a long checklist of major tourist attractions. Its charm is found in everyday Spanish life.

The town hall, church, local cafés, shops and other amenities are concentrated within a compact centre, while farmland begins almost immediately beyond the village streets.

A history with Muslim origins

Formentera has Muslim origins and passed to Jaime of Aragón in the 13th century. After changing ownership several times over the following centuries, the land eventually passed to the Marquis of Algorfa. His son Nicolás Pérez de Sarrió founded the settlement of Formentera del Segura in 1731 under Alfonsine law.

Its excellent irrigation conditions beside the Segura subsequently allowed agriculture to develop strongly.

The 1829 earthquake

Formentera was one of several Vega Baja communities affected by the major 1829 earthquake. Part of the village was destroyed and subsequently rebuilt.

The Parish Church of La Purísima was reconstructed during the nineteenth century and remains one of the best-known buildings in the traditional centre.

The Segura River

Formentera stands on the left bank of the Segura River, which has shaped the landscape, agriculture and development of the municipality for generations.

Today the river also provides a pleasant environment for walking and cycling. Follow it east and you eventually reach Guardamar and the Mediterranean.

The Sotos del Río Segura

Along the river are the Sotos del Segura, former meanders that have been transformed into green recreational areas.

The municipality organises events here as well as routes through the traditional agricultural landscape.

They are the kind of local green spaces that are particularly enjoyable when you actually live somewhere throughout the year.

The hydraulic flour mill

One of Formentera's most interesting heritage sites is the 18th-century Hydraulic Flour Mill beside the Segura.

The mill preserves historic machinery and demonstrates how river power was once used to grind grain. Visits can be arranged in advance through the Town Hall.

It is a small attraction, but one that tells an important story about agriculture and everyday life in the old Vega Baja.

El Molino Natural Area

The mill stands inside the El Molino Natural Area, a leafy recreational space on the riverbank with picnic tables, children's facilities and other amenities.

A pedestrian walkway connects the area to the town centre, and a small hermitage dedicated to San Roque can also be found here.

The Vega Baja countryside

Formentera del Segura is surrounded by the traditional agricultural landscape of the Vega Baja.

Citrus trees, vegetables, irrigation channels and quiet rural tracks fill the countryside, and the municipality organises routes through the huerta to help visitors discover this heritage.

It is ideal for cycling and offers a completely different perspective on the Costa Blanca from beaches and seaside developments.

Los Palacios

Around 1.5 kilometres from the main village is Los Palacios, which borders directly on the urban area of Rojales. Fincas de la Vega forms the municipality's third residential centre.

This distinction matters when looking for property. A home in Los Palacios can feel almost part of Rojales, while the original centre of Formentera has a more clearly defined small-village atmosphere.

Everything is close by

Location is one of Formentera del Segura's strongest points.

Rojales, Benijófar and Almoradí are only minutes away, while Ciudad Quesada provides a large range of international restaurants and services. Guardamar offers beaches and natural areas and Torrevieja is also within convenient driving distance.

You therefore gain the peace of a small municipality without feeling remote.

Monday market

Like markets throughout the Vega Baja, it is as much about the weekly routine and social atmosphere as it is about shopping.

Local fiestas

Traditional celebrations include festivities in honour of the Immaculate Conception in May and patron saint celebrations for San Miguel and San Roque in August. Los Palacios also holds its own festivities.

For a few days, the normally quiet municipality changes completely as local groups, music and community events fill the streets.

Traditional food

The local cuisine reflects the produce of the huerta. Traditional dishes include rice with rabbit, cocido con pelotas, arroz a la hora, snail stew and garlic soup.

Sweet specialities include buñuelos, almojábenas, toñas and Easter monas.

These are traditional Vega Baja dishes rather than food created specifically for tourism.

The Mediterranean is surprisingly close

Formentera del Segura is inland, but it is only around ten kilometres from the mouth of the Segura at Guardamar.

That makes it possible to enjoy a quieter agricultural setting at home while still heading to Guardamar's long beaches whenever you feel like it.

Living in Formentera del Segura

Living in Formentera del Segura is primarily about choosing a smaller and quieter residential environment.

Because Rojales, Benijófar and Ciudad Quesada are so close, the range of amenities available in practice is considerably greater than the municipality's small size suggests.

You can live in a relatively Spanish environment while large international communities remain only minutes away. This makes it easy to meet other foreign residents without having to live entirely inside an international residential area.

Buying property in Formentera del Segura

The exact location is important when buying here. The traditional centre, Los Palacios and Fincas de la Vega offer slightly different surroundings.

If you want Rojales virtually on your doorstep, Los Palacios may be particularly convenient. If the atmosphere of a small Spanish village matters more, the original centre may appeal.

Because the municipality is so compact, it is easy to explore all of these areas during a property viewing trip.

Why Formentera del Segura is worth discovering

Formentera del Segura has no huge marina, famous castle or long tourist promenade. And perhaps that is exactly the point.

Walk through the village, head down to the Segura, visit the old hydraulic mill and cycle through the surrounding agricultural landscape. Within minutes you can then be in Rojales or Benijófar, and a short drive later on Guardamar beach.

Small, peaceful and extremely well located.

Formentera del Segura is a good reminder that living well on the Costa Blanca does not always mean choosing one of its biggest or best-known towns.
