Greetings from Rojales: authentic Spain just a stone’s throw from the coast

Rojales Costa Blanca
3 Mar 2025

Many people who visit the Costa Blanca are familiar with places such as Torrevieja, Guardamar del Segura or Orihuela Costa. But a little further inland lies Rojales, a charming Spanish town that offers many residents the best of both worlds. Here you can enjoy an authentic Spanish atmosphere, whilst beaches, golf courses and modern amenities are just a few minutes away.

Rojales holds a special place in our hearts. This is where the Casas Palmeras office is based, and it’s where we spend a large part of our day. That’s precisely why we see every day why so many people choose to make their permanent home here.

A village full of character and history

Rojales is a town with a rich history dating back to the Moorish period. That history is still evident in the townscape, the traditional architecture and the local culture.

As you stroll through the town centre, you’ll discover charming squares, local restaurants and narrow streets where everyday Spanish life unfolds. On Thursdays, the village really comes to life during the weekly market, where people from across the region gather to buy fresh produce, clothes, flowers and local specialities.

One of Rojales’ most famous attractions is its cave dwellings. These unique homes have been carved out of the hillsides along the river and are now used as studios, exhibition spaces and cultural venues. Every first Sunday of the month, the caves are open to the public for a lively event featuring workshops, music and food.

Ciudad Quesada: a world of its own

Although many people know Rojales as a traditional Spanish village, others immediately think of Ciudad Quesada.

This popular residential development is part of the municipality of Rojales and has become one of the best-known residential areas on the Costa Blanca. What began as an ambitious project by entrepreneur Justo Quesada has since grown into a vibrant residential area with an international feel.

Ciudad Quesada boasts a wide range of restaurants, shops, supermarkets, sports facilities and a golf course. What’s more, people from dozens of different countries live here, creating a lively and diverse community.

Thanks to their hillside location, many of the properties also offer stunning views over the salt lakes of Torrevieja and La Mata.

Nature at your fingertips

Despite the excellent facilities, the countryside is never far away.

A favourite spot among locals is El Recorral Park, a green space featuring walking trails, picnic areas and beautiful viewpoints. The park is ideal for a peaceful stroll or a morning of exercise in the fresh air.

The famous salt lakes of La Mata and Torrevieja are also nearby. These unique natural areas are renowned for their striking colours, flamingos and healthy microclimate.

Those who prefer to head for the coast can reach the vast sandy beaches of Guardamar del Segura in about ten minutes. Here you’ll find miles of beaches, dunes and pine forests that are among the most beautiful on the Costa Blanca.

Daily life in Rojales

What many residents appreciate about Rojales is the combination of peace and quiet and convenience.

The town has all the everyday amenities you might need, such as supermarkets, shops, medical centres, pharmacies, restaurants and sports facilities. At the same time, life here often feels just a little more peaceful than in the larger coastal towns.

Thanks to its central location, places such as Torrevieja, Elche, Alicante and Murcia are easily accessible. This means you can enjoy all the benefits of the region without living in the heart of the tourist hubbub.

Why so many people choose Rojales

Everyone has their own reasons for choosing Rojales.

Some are drawn to the authentic Spanish atmosphere, whilst others appreciate the proximity to the coast, the golf courses or the international community. The combination of affordable housing, good amenities and excellent transport links also often plays a key role.

Whatever the reason, many people who once came here on holiday eventually decide to stay on for longer.

A place where Spain still feels like the real Spain

Perhaps that is Rojales’ greatest charm. Despite all the developments of recent years, the town has retained its own identity.

Here you’ll still find traditional Spanish squares, local festivals and a relaxed way of life. At the same time, modern amenities, international restaurants and beautiful residential areas are never far away.

It is precisely this combination that makes Rojales one of the most attractive places on the southern Costa Blanca for many people.
